Inbox Brief #7: How to Make a Font, a New Brief, and More!

Hello!

It’s time for the latest issue of Inbox Brief, a design newsletter by Goodbrief.

Let’s dive in!

1) Tapedeck

A catalog of audio tape cassette designs from the 60s through the 90s. There’s a surprising variety in the design of these commonplace objects. I double-dog-dare you to browse the collection and not come away feeling inspired.

2) Designing Gotham

An incredible article detailing the creation of Gotham. It breaks down how the typeface evolved from lettering throughout New York City and was carefully refined into the icon it is today. If you have ever used a font, you should give it a read.

3) Shadow Palette Generator

For the web designers out there, this is an indispensable tool for creating nice and smooth drop shadows. By layering several different shadows on top of each other, you can create a much softer and more realistic result than by using the defaults.

4) Practice Design Brief

Use this design brief for practice! Feel free to share your work on your portfolio or social media accounts.

ACME Rocket-Powered Roller Skates are the latest innovation from ACME Corporation. This product is designed to help determined individuals close the gap on any target, no matter the terrain or speed differential. Their core values are speed, same-minute delivery, and forward momentum at any cost.

The objective of this campaign is to develop a print and outdoor advertising suite that positions the Rocket-Powered Roller Skate as the premier choice for serious high-speed pursuit. The primary audience are dedicated professionals (canine or otherwise) who are willing to forgo safety in the pursuit of their goals.

Deliver a print ad and a billboard layout. For inspiration, look at 1950s American advertising and mail-order gadget ads.

Thanks for reading this issue of Inbox Brief.

If you're enjoying it, I would really appreciate it if you would share it with a friend who you think would find it useful too.

Until next time,

Manu
