Inbox Brief #6: Free Fonts, Design Rules, and UI Magic!

Hello!

It’s time for the latest issue of Inbox Brief, a design newsletter by Goodbrief.

Let’s dive in!

1) Design Spells

You know when you see a nice UI detail on a website or app that makes you so jealous that you didn’t think of it that your skin literally turns green? (No? Just me?) It could be a subtle animation or a not-so-subtle 3D thing that really calls attention to itself. Design Spells is a website (and newsletter) that collects these UI details, and it’s a great source of inspiration (or envy).

2) Visual design rules you can safely follow every time

If you read last week’s newsletter, you know I love articles like these. A rapid-fire collection of quick tips that you can apply to almost any design.

3) Velvetyne

A collection of free and open-source fonts. A great place to browse if you ever feel like you keep turning to the same handful of fonts over and over again.

4) Practice Design Brief

Use this design brief for practice! Feel free to share your work on your portfolio or social media accounts.

Griffin is a workout app offering custom training programs for people building a consistent fitness habit. Their mission is to make fitness accessible to everyone. Their core values are simplicity, developing discipline, and delivering progress.

The objective of this design project is to develop a visual identity and UI design system that feels clear, motivating, and welcoming, without resorting to fitness tropes. The primary audience is adults aged 20–40 who are committed to improving their fitness but are not athletes or experienced gym-goers. A secondary audience is personal trainers who may recommend or use the app with clients.

Deliver a logo, color palette, typography system, and app icon. For an extra challenge, design a sample set of app screens. For inspiration, look at the focused UI of Whoop and Fitbod, and the welcoming design of Gentler Streak and Headspace.

Thanks for reading this issue of Inbox Brief.

If you're enjoying it, I would really appreciate it if you would share it with a friend who you think would find it useful too.

Until next time,

Manu
